History
The sport of bowling is one of the most popular Special Olympics North Carolina training and competition programs. In 1984, bowling premiered at state-level competition in Sanford. Since then, it has grown rapidly. Bowling also enjoys widespread popularity across the nation in Special Olympics, as it is second only to track and field in athlete participation.
Events Offered
SONC offers the traditional format of league-style bowling for singles competition and singles ramp (assisted & unassisted).
In doubles and five-person team competition (traditional and Unified Sports), SONC uses the Baker System format places, which emphasis on the team effort rather than individual accomplishments of team members. Doubles or team members take turns bowling frames within one game, as opposed to team members bowling individual games and combining the scores for one team score.
Competition Opportunities
SONC Bowling Tournament is split into two separate regional state-level tournaments held in the beginning of December.
The National Unified Sports Bowling Tournament is a quota-based additional competition opportunity hosted by Special Olympics North America and Special Olympics Ohio in Las Vegas, NV. This event is held in conjunction with the USBC tournament at the National Bowling Stadium. Programs will be notified if their athletes are selected to attend this event. SONC uses the advancement criteria set forth by SOI to select athletes based on past performance at the most recent state-level event.
